Train Trip to Washington

Tuesday morning Sherry & I are ready to board the Empire Builder. We are on our way to visit Sherry's daughter (my niece) Jill and son-in-law John in Yakima, WA. This was my first train trip and Sherry's second. The train was running an hour and a half late already!
Because we had a little extra time, Mom was kind enough to run to Miracle Mart for rolls, subs, and chips for breakfast and lunch. Thanks, Mom!
While waiting outside, we met Sherry's classmate from Bismarck High. Keith Bear (storyteller and musician) was hired to entertain in the Lounge Car from Minot to Whitefish, MT.

The train finally arrives!
Our carry-on bags are filled with rolls, subs, chips, and lots of chocolate!
Keith Bear performing in the lounge. He has a website with cd's to buy. He told us his agent lives in Washington.
Sherry enjoys her boxed chicken meal in the Lounge car. It really was yummy!
Now for the wonderful scenery pictures! Because our train was now running TWO hours late, by the time we got to Glacier, it was dark and there was heavy fog in the mountains. I could not find the right setting for nighttime pics as you can see!!

Morning arrived, and we are now close to Pasco, WA.

Jill & John had to rent a motel room in Pasco (2 hour drive from Yakima), to pick us up at our scheduled 5:07 arrival! It turned out we were still almost 2 hours late, so they could have slept in! Before we arrived, Jill texted Sherry to let her know the State Patrol was waiting at the station to pick up a passenger on our train! We saw him handcuffed. I guess he got on in Williston. I'm not sure what he was arrested for, but do know it made the evening news.
Sherry & I (looking fresh from our 24 hour ride!), went to I-hop for breakfast.
John was a great tour guide as we drove to Yakima. Yakima is in the desert, but is a big agricultural area (irrigated from the Columbia River). There are lots of apple and pear orchards, corn, hops, peaches, apricots, peppers, grapes, potatoes, onions, and more! We may tour a winery!
Some scenery on the way to Yakima

After a huge breakfast, we are now eating at Red Robin! We lunched with the best from Perry Tech! (President, Financial Aid Director, IT, and of course Jill, the Registrar!) They were so much fun! Jill's lucky to have such a great staff to work with!
After lunch, Jill invites us to tour the college.
This is part of the Student Union. They are in the middle of extensive remodeling.
Carol, & Jill share a laugh about the heels they found under Jill's desk when furniture was moved for new carpet. I guess Jill had run home for lunch one day, and when she returned, forgot to put her work shoes back on. Instead she stepped into a pair of old tennies. Noticing this when she got to work, she remembered heels she had in her trunk from a wedding awhile back, and wore them. This attire is so not Jill, hence the laughing! The custodian was not amused when she asked him (in front of all of us), if he had left them there!

Jill was a great tour guide also!
The Recruiters! (Jenn & Nicole have been Jill's good friends for a long time.)
More staff
This is the apple orchard next to Jill & John's house. I'll send pics of their house soon!
As if two big meals weren't enough in one day, we went to Olive Garden with John's parents Gene & Ida. We had a wonderful first day!
